Continuing Education Online Real Estate and Construction

The real estate industry is one in which continuing education is a must, not just a recommendation. With ever changing laws, standards and markets, real estate professionals need to keep on top of their knowledge of the field. From required post-license courses and continuing education courses to National Association of REALTORS® designations, there are many options for increasing your real estate knowledge. We also recommend learning more about other professions within the real estate industry to make your job more productive. Here are the three main categories of real estate continuing education to boost your career:
Post-License Courses: Agents & Brokers
- Sales Associates –After passing the Florida real estate exam and obtaining your sales associate license, it is time to take the required 45 hour Sales Associate Post License Education Course. While you have until your license expiration date to complete the course, we recommend taking it right after obtaining your license as it helps you learn some of the basics of using your license. This initial renewal course is intended to provide licensees an opportunity to build on the Principles & Practices covered in the pre-licensing course and to present new hands-on training in important subject areas.
- Brokers –IFREC offers three 30 hour post license education courses for brokers looking to further their real estate education:
- A Practical Guide to Owning/Managing a Real Estate Office — A practical course designed to assist a new broker in planning, opening and staffing an office.
- Real Estate Investment — A course that provides a practical understanding of the real estate investment process. Students purchase, develop and sell a model property.
- Single Family Residential Property Management — A course designed to teach real estate brokers how to list, lease, rent, inspect and manage residential properties in accordance with the Florida Residential Landlord Tenant Laws.
These post-license courses are the requirement for your initial license renewal. It is also important to note that if these courses are not successfully completed prior to the expiration date you can lose your license. Once the post-license requirements have been satisfied for both sales associates and brokers, you will be required to complete the 14-hour continuing education course for each subsequent renewal:
- Agents & Brokers –For agents and brokers, the 14-hour Continuing Education for Florida Real Estate Professionals Course meets the 3-hour core law and 11-hour specialty credit requirement for real estate sales associates and brokers. It covers: real estate license law updates, escrow accounts and disciplinary action, other state and federal laws affecting real estate, real estate brokerage relationships, property condition and inspections, fair housing and the Americans with Disabilities Act, real estate finance, and contracts and closing.
Specialized NAR® Designations
- Accredited Buyer Representative (ABR®) –The ABR® designation is for real estate buyer agents who focus on working directly with buyer-clients at every stage of the home-buying process.
- Senior Real Estate Specialist (SRES®) –The SRES® designation is for REALTORS® who want to be able to meet the special needs of maturing Americans when selling, buying, relocating or refinancing residential or investment properties.
- Military Relocation Professional (MRP) –The MRP certification is for real estate professionals who want to work with current and former military service members. It educates REALTORS® about working with U.S. service members and their families and veterans to find the housing solutions that best suit their needs and to take full advantage of available benefits and support.
- Broker Price Opinion Resource (BPOR) –The BPOR certification is specifically designed to help residential real estate agents and brokers enhance their skills in creating BPOs, reducing risk and applying alternative valuation techniques.
- New-Home Construction and Buyer Representation –Gain the product and transaction knowledge needed in order to guide buyer-clients through the steps and processes for purchase, construction and customization of a new home.
Other Industry Professionals
- Mortgage Loan Originator (MLO) –MLOs connect potential borrowers with lenders. In other words, they facilitate the loan process for home buyers by helping them complete applications and assess which loans are the most appropriate and beneficial. As a real estate agent or broker, you will most likely work with many different MLOs throughout your career. It would be helpful to learn about the role an MLO plays in the buying and selling process so you can more productively work with these professionals in the future. You might even want to consider obtaining an MLO license to better understand this very important part of the real estate industry. Learn more here.
- Home Inspector –Home inspectors are an invaluable resource in the real estate industry and to practice this trade you first need to obtain a license. They use their specialized education in construction standards and health and safety codes to inspect homes prior to purchase. They write reports of their findings and provide clarity and understanding to your clients, thus understanding their process can make your job run smoother. Again, obtaining your own home inspection license will set you apart in the real estate industry and make working with these professionals much more productive. Learn more here.
